Interview with… New Rules

Share:

Following their sold out 2019 headline tour, dynamic pop trio New Rules will embark on a major headline UK tour in February! With members from London and Ireland, the songwriters explain how they met, and what celebrity they hope to bump into on their Glasgow date!

Introduce yourselves – tell us about you, your background, music and formation.

We actually met through social media – we’re a very Gen-Z band lol!

Nathan [Lambert] was doing lots of songwriting and came across covers that Alec [McGarry] and Ryan [Meaney] posted online. Since then we’ve been “An Englishman an Irishman and a Baby Deer” (Alec has Bambi-like features). As singer/songwriters and musicians we’re really passionate about the music we make, so it’s great to see people enjoying it at our gigs.

What was the first record you bought?

Ryan: Costello Music – The Fratellis

Alec: Hybrid Theory – Linkin Park

Nathan: Inside in/Inside out – The Kooks

Who was the first band/artist you ever saw perform live?

Ryan: Green Day – Marlay Park Dublin

Alec: Wombats – Alexandra Palace

Nathan: Two Door Cinema Club – O2 Arena

If you could collaborate with any other artists who would you choose?

John Mayer and Julia Michaels come to mind; we love their song writing. John Mayer has always been a big influence for us. We were lucky enough to support Julia on her UK and Ireland tour last year and she was absolutely brilliant. We’re massive fans of them both so a collab with either would be a dream come true.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Blackbear and Morgan Wallen are getting a lot of streams from the New Rules boys right now. A friend of ours got us on to country music recently and we’ve been nerding out about the lyrics.

What is your favourite song to perform live?

Our song ‘Happy Ever After You’ is our favourite to play at the moment. It’s got loads of energy and we love when the crowd jump with us.

You supported Little Mix on their massive arena tour last year, how was that?

It was an incredible experience playing at venues across the UK and Ireland we’ve been dreaming about our whole lives. The girls were so lovely to us and we really enjoyed getting to know them.

Where in the world would you like to play that you have not already?

We would love to play shows around the rest of Europe. We’re starting to play more shows abroad now, we played a headline show in Mexico and have a trip to the Philippines coming up. It’s been amazing to play to our own crowds in places on the other side of the world from us. Were very lucky lads to get to travel the world doing what we love and we owe it all to our incredible fans both home and abroad.

Plans for the rest of the year?

We’re planning on writing and releasing loads more music. It’s been so much fun seeing our headline shows get bigger and bigger, so we’re excited to see what 2020 has in store!

Message for the fans?

Thank you! We owe a lot to you all for such a special 2019, our first year as a live band. We’re excited for 2020 and can’t wait to share it with you!

What are you most looking forward to doing/seeing whilst in Glasgow/Newcastle?

Hopefully bumping into Lewis Capaldi. We’d love to have a proper look around Sauchiehall Street while we’re there for our February show. Some of our earliest fans are from Newcastle so we’re looking forward to seeing them again!
