For singer-songwriter Lily Denning, 2019 has been all about achieving dreams and conquering charts. Armed with sweet yet powerful vocals and fluid melodies, she’s definitely marked herself out as one to watch for 2020.
Hailing from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, she received equipment for her 18th birthday that meant she could record and produce her music independently. These gifts changed everything as, only a year later, she’d have a number one single.
Her debut mellow pop track ‘Armageddon’ was released in February this year, introducing the world to her enchanting sound. Produced by Will Hicks (Ed Sheeran, Lily Allen), it was championed by the likes of Clash and Vents Magazine, the former which said she had “bold, unmissable pop talent”.
Speaking of the song itself, she said “‘Armageddon’ represents the battle between repeatedly being drawn towards the bad and discovering the strength to resist it. The song illustrates the decision to turn your back on something negative and the consequential relief of letting it go. It’s about feeling empowered by your self-worth and embracing the freedom that comes with that. I want the song to glorify independence whilst acknowledging the sometimes impossible process of detaching from damaging relationships.”
A month later saw Denning catapult into the mainstream as she collaborated with producers Mahalo and DLMT for the bright deep house single ‘So Cold’. With over 15 million streams worldwide, 200K views on the music video, and reaching #1 on the Billboard Dance Airplay Chart, her voice quickly became the pinnacle of industry conversation. While championing the soft-lighted music video, Dancing Astronaut added “A refined addition to ‘So Cold’, the ethereal airiness of Denning’s vocal floated atop the track’s deeper bass lines, to add texture to the transfixing cut.”
In August, she released follow-up solo single ‘Me, Myself & I’; a bold ectropop track speaking of emotional independence. She told tmwr magazine “I wanted this track to motivate everyone regardless of age and gender. Loving yourself is not an obnoxious or bad thing; it’s a very important trait to learn.”
The upbeat melody allows her vocals as well as instrumental talents to thrive even further as empowering hooks and stirring piano interludes make an appearance. Co-written with Nick Atkinson and Edd Holloway (Lewis Capaldi), this third track proves that Denning has something new to offer with every release, and we can’t wait to see what the next single brings.
