Interview with… Frank Turner
You’re starting the Be More Kind Tour 2019 next week, what can the audience expect?
It’s me and the Sleeping Souls giving it our all, as usual. We have a big production show this time around, which is exciting, and we have Jimmy Eat World and Grace Petrie along for the ride as well. I’m excited for the shows.
Will you be playing any new material or a mixture of your back catalogue?
I always try to play a mix of stuff from all the records I’ve made. There will be a fair bit from “Be More Kind”, of course, as that’s the most recent record. But we like to keep everyone happy and mix it up.
What is your favourite song to perform live?
Whatever gets the crowd involved in the show and breaks down the barrier between me and the audience.
When you’re not performing, what do you do to keep yourself busy when you’re on tour / on the road?
I am very busy all day on the road for the most part, with press, admin, preparation for the show and so on. If I do get any downtime I like to try and have a look around wherever we are.
Where has been your favourite gig?
At nearly 2,300 shows in, I can’t really pick just one.
Are you looking forward to be joined by Jimmy Eat World across the shows?
Very much so. I grew up with their music, especially “Clarity”, and we’ve crossed paths in the past. I’m very flattered that they agreed to the shows.
Which other artists are you listening to at the moment?
Lately a lot of Grace Petrie’s stuff, she’s ace. Also Sean MacGowan, Girli, Hobo Johnson and Milk Teeth.
Which song do you wish you had written?
Most of John K Samson’s work. Ditto Adam Duritz.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
In my dreams, Robbie Robertson. Maybe Nick Cave, or Regina Spektor.
Plans for the rest of the year?
I have a new book coming out in March, and a very busy festival summer, and I’ll be in the studio quite a lot making new music.
Message for the fans?
The music I make is the message.
