King Nun started out as the misfits of their local open mic night in Twickenham. After bewildering the elderly residents and infuriating the neighbours (who sent noise complaints every time they took to the stage), Theo Polyzoides, James Upton, Caius Stockley-Young and Nathan Gane have gone on to be one of the most discretely successful up-and-comers of the last couple of years.
They released their debut single ‘Tulip’ in 2016; a track fueled by scuzzy grunge riffs intertwined with catchy punk hooks, completely contrasting against it’s title. After releasing just two songs, the London quartet were snapped up by Dirty Hit Records – the same label behind The 1975, Superfood, Wolf Alice and Pale Waves – pushing them further into the indie limelight.
Their first ever UK tour was in support of Superfood, but at the age of just 17 it involved sneaking into their own shows. Since then, they’ve performed at Reading & Leeds, The Great Escape and Latitude Festival to name a few, as well having a co-headlining UK tour alongside Freak last year.
This month they’re due to release their highly anticipated debut EP I Have Love as well as embark on a headlining tour across the country. It will feature comeback track ‘Chinese Medicine’, which Dork says “sees the band not just shifting up a gear, but swinging straight into the fast lane. Two minutes and forty five seconds of firecracker action, it’s a show of potential realised with a promise of more to come.” One of the most recent lead singles ‘Family Portrait’ was released in September in the form of a weathered music video. The mellow indie-pop track goes from smooth, falsetto verses to bopping choruses, marking out a new direction for the rising four-piece.
