Charlotte Lawrence may only be 18 years old, but she’s already established herself as a model, social media influencer and, most importantly, the singer you need to listen to this summer. Inspired by the likes of Lorde, SZA and Bon Iver, she has resonated with her audience through her honest and passionate lyrics that can hit close to home for many.
The pop star from Los Angeles released her first single ‘The Finish Line’ at just 14 years old, and began playing piano at the age of 5; shocking her parents with her musical talent. Her potential has even been recognised by Spotify as in March she was invited to be one of the first artists to be part of their Louder Together campaign. The programme is being used to encourage upcoming singers to collaborate on original Spotify Singles which will be released as multi-artist songs on the platform. Lawrence worked on one original song ‘Psychopath’ and a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’ with Nina Nesbitt and Sasha Sloan. ‘Psychopath’ was written in just six hours, and although they started as strangers, the process brought the women together, with them even joking about forming a girl group.
Lawrence released her debut EP Young in June, but by this point she’d already amassed over 2 million Spotify plays with her earlier singles, including a Grease cover and the youthful bop ‘Seventeen’. Young is comprised of six powerful pop tracks which take listeners on a turbulent journey of adolescence. On the record she worked with producers such as Joe London (Pitbull, Fifth Harmony, Lizzo) and Mag (Jason Derulo, Flo Rida, Cher Lloyd) as well as writers including Hayley Gene Penner and Jesse Saint John. Clash referred to the release as “a daring, dazzling collection of pop potential”, while Ones To Watch called her lyrics “refreshingly vibrant”. Her follow-up release Reckless is due later this summer.
She is also the daughter of Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence and actress Christa Miller, who played a recurring role in the show. Both her parents influenced her career choice, as in an interview with WWD she said “I think I get my writing genes from my father, and my mom has insane music taste and always did the music supervision for the shows that she was in. So I had great music around me and art and always grew up on the creative side.” Two of her singles ‘Ever After’ and ‘The Finish Line’ have also been used on Cougar Town in 2015; the show in which her mother played a leading role in from 2009 to 2015.
