In 2011, Chrissy Costanza (vocals), Dan Gow (guitar) and Will Ferri (drums) joined forces to form the rising pop rock group Against The Current, who are now on their way to becoming one of the strongest alternative bands on the scene. The trio from Poughkeepsie, New York have been compared to the likes of Halsey and Paramore, but maintain originality through their diverse range of electro-rock sounds.
They gained popularity through posting covers on YouTube such as 5 Seconds of Summer’s ‘She Looks So Perfect’, occasionally with multi-instrumentalist YouTuber Alex Goot (3.2 subscribers) which proved to be incredibly popular. For example, their joint cover of Carly Rae Jepson and Owl City’s ‘Good Time’, which was uploaded in July 2012, now has over 4.8 million views.
They self-released their first EP Infinity in May 2014, which was shortly followed by Infinity (The Acoustic Sessions) in November. The original reached #28 in Billboard’s Heatseekers Album charts, and subsequently they toured the release across the US for throughout the rest of the year. Eventually they went on to record their second EP Gravity which was released early 2015, and peaked at #4 on the Heatseakers Album charts as well as featured on three other Billboard charts: Alternative Album, Rock Album and Independent Album. Its successes also includes gaining them a record deal with Fueled By Ramen (All Time Low, Paramore, twenty one pilots). It also led to their first world tour which visited major cities in the UK, Europe, North America and Asia. Their debut album In Our Bones came out in May 2016 and received a 9/10 rating from Bring The Noise, who also commented “[In Our Bones] displays not only a special talent from the three piece, but a fearlessness to be themselves in a time where pop-punk has had criticism over its dominant pop nature.”
This year, they surprised fans with their first material in two years: singles ‘Almost Forgot’ and ‘Strangers Again’. These releases come off the back of the band announcing that they will once again be coming to the UK to play a flurry of shows this September. Having toured with the likes of All Time Low, Fall Out Boy and Good Charlotte, Against The Current have learnt from the very best in the game and continue to leave their mark in every city they visit.
