The members of indie punk four-piece Blackwaters – Max (vocals), David (guitar), Ollie (bass) and James (drums) – all met while studying music in Guildford and have quickly made a name for themselves across the nation. They infuse post punk and indie to create their raw sound that translates well in their chaotic live shows. They are reminiscent of the iconic sub-culture of the 70s, especially with their big chants and scuzzy guitar sounds in ‘Fuck Yeah’, but also take on a more melodic approach to their song-writing to give a remarkable modern twist.
Their gritty noise has struck a chord with one person in particular: The Libertines’ Carl Barat. After witnessing one of their hectic shows, the music mogul lent a hand in helping them record their hit singles ‘So Far Out’ and ‘Down’, which brought out the best in their take on the indie punk genre. Blackwaters have gone on to pour everything they’ve learnt from this experience as they released their debut EP People Street on June 29th through the band’s own label Jarr’ed Up Records.
Their energetic, captivating performances have been highly praised by the likes of Louder Than War as the band push to perform as many gigs as possible. Festival appearances include Isle of Wight, Neighbourhood Weekender, Download, Kendal Calling and Live At Leeds to name a few, as well as having toured alongside Strange Bones, Marmozets, and Barat’s new band The Jackals.
