Rapper Jamel Phillips found fame – or rather fame found him – when he joined the New York hip hop collective A$AP Mob alongside the likes of A$AP Rocky and 13 other producers, rappers, music video directors and fashion designers. The 29-year-old Bronx rapper’s moniker came from his nickname 212 after his area code in Harlem, before developing into A$AP Twelvyy when he joined the Mob. As part of A$AP Mob, he has worked on two of their singles and co-written and featured on their albums Cozy Tapes Vol. 1: Friends and Cozy Tapes Vol. 2: Too Cozy, as well as their mixtape Lords Never Worry. His biggest hits as the Mob’s leading artist were ‘Presidents’, ‘Glock Rivers’ and ‘Heaven Can Wait’.
As a solo artist, Twelvyy has guest-featured on many tracks including Flatbush Zombies’ ‘Leather Symphony’, Smoke DZA’s ‘Game 7’, and Tray Pizzy’s ‘Who You Wit’ to name a few. In August 2017 he released his highly anticipated debut solo album 12, which had been in the process of recording for three years. However, fans appreciated his pace as he stated “Most of the time it’s just the pressure of everybody else saying ‘You gotta do this now or it ain’t gonna happen.’ Me and my brothers have the luxury to have other brothers in our set to hold you down. I’m grateful to have that – if it wasn’t for that, I wouldn’t have been able to take so long. I would’ve had to rush to put it out.”
12 proved that it may have been the A$AP Mob that helped shape him, but Twelvyy’s now making it alone on his own merit
