At just 24-years-old, twins Catherine and Lizzy Ward Thomas have already made history as British country artists and have been on the rise ever since. The pair from Hampshire grew up on a farm and began having songwriting lessons while they were in sixth form, having no idea what they would one day lead to.
Their music is described as country with a British twist as they stray away from the stereotypical subjects on the genre such as cowboys and travelling down dirt roads in southern America. Their lyrics are a contrast of heartfelt and empowering to humorously talking about a SatNav getting them lost in a small village in Essex. Through this, they have been named Britain’s first country stars – a title they could proudly claim.
They released their debut album From Where We Stand in 2014, which sold 25,000 copies and won UK Album of the Year at the British Country Music Awards. It was through their 2016 follow-up album that the duo began to truly make waves in the scene though as Cartwheels became the first album by a UK country act to reach number one on the UK Albums Chart – all while they were still playing 200-capacity venues. They had tough competition as they were up against indie-rap star Jamie T and his album Trick for the top spot but beat him by 750 sales. Cartwheels was released through Sony and WTW Music, and has since been certified silver in the UK.
Ward Thomas have toured across the UK in depth, while playing the likes of Country 2 Country and BBC Radio 2 Live festivals. To see the dynmaic pair for yourself, you can catch them performing at London Omeara later this month.
