Shockwaves NME Awards 2011: The Highlights

Last Wednesday night we were graced with another music Ceremony to award the best in altnernative UK and International music. The hotly anticipated Shockwaves NME Awards were held at the Brixton o2 Academy, South London, where rock royalty filled the room for a night of musical entertainment.

In the music calendars most credible award show, fans voted in their millions for their favourite artists and bands. Muse, Foals, Hurts, Laura Marling and Biffy Clyro were amongst some of the winners on the night. And much like the Brit Awards held last week, the might of UK talent has once again proven its worth and made us all proud to to be British.

 

Kicking off the show, American rockers My Chemical Romance took to the stage to perform their bit-of-a-mouthful single ‘Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na’) and Vampire Money to the star-studded crowd.  They proved a popular choice when they went on to scoop two awards for Best Video for the former performed single and Best International Band.
Another performer on the night was the incredible PJ Harvey who performed songs from her new album, and was later presented with the Teenage Cancer Trust Outstanding Contribution To Music Award.
Other honours went to Muse, who picked up the coveted Best British Band Award over heavyweights Kasabian, The Arctic Monkeys, Foals and Biffy Clyro. Lead singer Matt Bellamy also received the award for Sexiest Male due to his legion of female fans. The band have had a very successful four-year-run of wins, showing just how highly regarded they are in the music business.

 

Despite losing out on Best British Band, Scottish-rockers Biffy Clyro did not miss out on an accolade when they were awarded Best Live Band for their show-stopping gigs.  They will be performing at the Teenage Cancer Trust event at the Royal Albert Hal, London on 23rd March to show the crowd just how much they merited the award.

Arcade Fire continued their run of success, picking up their third Best Album Award in a matter of weeks. The canadian rockers must be riding on a high after winning a Grammy, two Brit Awards and now an NME Award for their inspiring album The Suburbs.

Performers Hurts claimed Best New Band, fighting off stiff competition from Liam Gallagher’s Beady Eye, Everything Everything, The Drums and Two Door Cinema Club. This prize is particularly sought after as it gives massive kudos to upcoming fresh talent looking to do bigger and better things!

Following Dave Grohl’s award for Godlike Genius, The Foo Fighters closed the show in similar style to the opening, going out with a bang to show everyone that they are still the Kings of Rock!
Other categories which were not as revered as the music were awards for: most stylish, least stylish, sexiest female, best film, hero, villain, worst band, worst album and so on. Winners (or not) of such categories went to: Brandon Flowers, Justin Beiber, Allison Mosshart, Inception, Lady Gaga, David Cameron, The Jonas Brothers and Justin Beiber respectively. Not surprisingly, those voted the worst in their category, were not there to collect their ‘awards’.

It was typically a raucous affair which always creates a bit of drama, but to see it for yourself watch the show in full hosted by Alexa Chung over on 4od now.
