We caught up with singer and producer Reuben Aziz ahead of his performance at Abbie McCarthy’s Good Karma Club this May…
Introduce yourself! Where are you from and how did you get into music?
My name is Reuben Aziz I’m from Southampton but based in London. I got into music when I was really young. I guess church was my first introduction to music, and I remember Michael Jackson being a big inspiration of mine when I was really young. I’d watch his music videos on repeat he was a big factor in the start of my love for music
If you could describe your music in 3 words, what would they be?
If I could describe my music in 3 words I’d probably say – authentic, nostalgic and I’d use the word togetherness. I feel my music isnt for a certain demographic of people, a certain age ethnicity. I hope that whoever listen to my music can take something from it and if they dont, thats cool too.
Who are your influences and how do they shape your music?
My influences range- Frank Ocean, Kanye West, Pharrel Williams, Tyler the creator, Michael Jackson as I’ve said, even Billie Eilish has really inspired me recently. I think it’s constantly evolving. Seems like I fall in love with a new artist every week
What does your writing process look like? Is it always the same?
My writing process varies to be honest. Sometimes starts with me creating the beat, could be simply chords on my guitar, I’ve fully started songs off humming in my voice memos too. I dont like to have one process I find it constricting, I try feel as much as possible and just listen to that.
Any new music in the works?
Always new music in the works I struggle to rest lol.
You’re on the line-up for the upcoming Abbie McCarthy’s Good Karma Club show this May at The Grace! Are you excited? What can we expect from your performance?
I’m really excited for the performance in may, so grateful for the opportunity. I guess just expect me to sing and bring my guitar, I’ll probably play some unreleased music too.
