We caught up with London-based singer-songwriter Ella More ahead of her performance at Abbie McCarthy’s Good Karma Club at The Grace next month…
Introduce yourself! Where are you from and how did you get into music?
Hey! My name is Ella More and I’m a singer/songwriter from Birmingham!! It’s hard to remember what got me into making music, maybe a lot of heartbreak and nowhere else to channel it, but it quickly became my go to for every mood and now I just want to do it every day!
What’s your biggest pinch-me moment so far?
One of the first gigs I ever went to without my mom was to watch Plan B play at the O2 academy in Birmingham, and last year I had the honour of supporting Jorja Smith on that same stage. It was a magical full circle moment, and to be supporting an artist like Jorja Smith who I’ve looked up to and been inspired by for such a long time was so special.
Who are your influences and how do they shape the music you write today?
There are so many! First of all my parents who raised me listening to a really wide spectrum of music. On my mums side it was reggae, R&B, soul, and funk, while my dad is a huge lover of 90s trance music, classical and folk, so that hugely broadened my taste and experience of music from a very young age. Then there’s artists such as Solange, Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Amy Winehouse, James Blake, who I grew up listening to, and artists like Saya Gray, Charlotte Day Wilson, Naomi Sharon who I’ve discovered more recently that inspire me daily.
Any new music coming soon?
YES! Super super soon, around the date of the gig actually I’ll be dropping my next single ‘Balance’. I’m so so excited, this is my favourite song yet so I can’t wait to finally be able to share it with everyone.
Where do you see yourself as an artist in 5 years?
I’d like to be in a chalet in the mountains somewhere, or in a hut by the beach in a beautiful studio just creating and collaborating with as many artists/people as I can, making music that feels wholly authentic to me and just enjoying the process of doing so. A global arena tour would be pretty cool too I suppose…
You’re on the line-up for the upcoming Abbie McCarthy’s Good Karma Club show this Mat at The Grace! Are you excited to play? What can we expect from your performance?
I am so excited!! The Grace looks like an awesome venue and I know a few people who have played Good Karma Club in the past and I have heard amazing things from them all! This performance will include the singles that I released last year, the new single balance, and some unreleased bits!
