The Academic are an indie-rock four-piece from Ireland. The band consists of Craig Fitzgerald, Dean Gavin, and brothers Matthew and Stephen Murtagh. Formed in 2013, the band began releasing music in 2015 with their debut single ‘Northern Boy’, shortly followed by their debut EP ‘Loose Friends’ later on that year. Their first headline show took place at Vicar Street in Dublin which was a sell-out.
Their debut self-released album ‘Tales From The Backseat’ was released in 2018 and immediately reached #1 on the Irish Album Charts. The Academic played their biggest headline show to date at the Iveagh Gardens, Dublin in 2018 before touring the UK, Europe and North America.
Having supported big names like Noel Gallagher, Catfish and The Bottlemen and The Rolling Stones, the band are quickly becoming known around the world. They have also become a favourite at festivals, having performed on the main stage at Reading & Leeds.
The band have had a busy 2022. The Academic supported The Killers on their Dublin dates, they played festivals such as Neighbourhood Weekender and the Isle of Wight, and headlined their UK and Irish tour in April.
