For Fans Of: Ariana Grande, Halsey, Charlotte Lawrence
Pop’s freshest face Sonia may have only released her debut single a mere three months ago, but she’s quickly capturing the hearts of listeners and industry tastemakers with her elegant vocals and emotive lyrics.
The 20-year-old was born in Paris to an American actress and Tunisian film producer, both of which encouraged her to explore the arts. At age 5 she began to learn the piano, mastering the likes of Bach and Chopin. Three years later, she was then begging for singing lessons to complete her act; soon spending countless hours singing songs from ABBA and The Beatles to Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin. This mixture of artists has resulted in the varying sound she emits today, from classical music to urban contemporary and R&B.
Speaking of this combination, she says “I don’t believe in having one side, one sound, or just one vision. Everything you do should be a collection of who you are as a person, that’s why my music is mysterious and ambivalent. It’s modern, but nostalgic. It’s joyful, but melancholic. My goal is to bring as many of these opposite feelings together without limits and create something personal that others can relate to.”
She devoted two years towards creating her self-titled debut EP, which was released in November this year. Working alongside the likes of executive producer Daehler (The Weeknd, Halsey), The ANMLS (Belly, TheWeeknd), Dayyon Alexander and J Moon, she developed a heartfelt theme that flows along all four tracks. The music video for her lead single ‘Joyride’ premiered on Billboard, who complimented the beautiful blend of her “airy vocals mirroring the dreamy [aesthetic]”. The song was further featured as the soundtrack of fashion designer Alain Mikli’s 2019 autumn collection, which Sonia was also the face of as part of her coinciding modelling career.
Over the span of her short music career, she’s already accumulated over 5 million streams and nearly 800 thousand followers. These incredible numbers are just testament to Sonia’s talent, which we’ll surely be hearing much for of soon.
