Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern joined forces in 2014 to create the entity that is Sofi Tukker. Their music ranges from EDM to jungle-pop and house, and isn’t defined by a single sound. They believe that music is a universal language able to be felt by everyone no matter their mother tongue, and therefore incorporate Portuguese lyrics inspired by Brazilian poems.
Their debut single ‘Drinkee’ (taken from their debut EP Soft Animals, 2016) was nominated for ‘Best Dance Recording’ at the 2017 GRAMMYs and is now certified Gold. They followed up on this success with the release of their debut album Treehouse in April 2018, which debuted at number 1 in the iTunes Dance charts and was also nominated for a GRAMMY. Narc Magazine stated the record has “the ability to bring the bilingual heart of a Brazilian carnival into mainstream commercial dance music”, while DIY rated it four stars and said “If anything’s clear across Treehouse, it’s that Sofi Tukker don’t do things by halves”.
The pair have also had incredible commercial success in the past few years. ‘Drinkee’ and follow-up Platinum-certified single ‘Best Friend’ have been featured on hit Hollywood films The Incredible Jessica James and Oceans 8. They’ve had three tracks feature on EA Sports’ FIFA games: ‘Johny’ in 2017, ‘Best Friend’ in 18 and ‘Swing’ in 20. ‘Best Friend’ and ‘Batshit’ have been used at Apple events and in adverts, gaining them worldwide recognition.
Their latest release, the Dancing On The People EP, was released this September and features some of their most popular tracks such as ‘Purple Hat’. It encapsulates the essence of 90s dance with a contemporary, bilingual groove that brings it into the 21st century. NME commented “Sugary-sour electro-gloop, with a bittersweet chase, it’s a glimpse of the feelings that send people running for the dancefloor in the first place”, and Dancing Astronaut agreed, stating “[it’s] a masterful, colorful, and exciting collection of songs that’s purpose is to make listeners move to their own beat.”
Their electric and energetic live shows have sold out venues and graced major festival stages across the planet, and they have also performed on major TV shows such as The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (USA), The X-Factor (Italy), Sunday Brunch (UK), Late Show (Russia) and BuzzRhythm (Japan).
Speaking of their live performances, Halpern told Billboard “We like to do ridiculous things to make people react and get them out of themselves. We want people to feel shocked and as excited as we are, but still somehow connected to us personally. We’re not gonna hide behind big production. We like to be silly and playful and colorful, like we’re there with the people and not just performing for them.”
