Mexican-American youngster Omar Apollo is an up-and-coming, exciting new popstar. Grouped alongside other big hitters such as Billie Eilish, Clairo and King Princess as a future superstar, he heads to the UK this November, and he couldn’t be more excited.
When and why did you start playing?
I was 12 when I started playing. I don’t remember why, but I think it was because of someone in my family.
What tricks have you got up your sleeve ahead of your upcoming shows?
I wouldn’t want to share my tricks, you’ve got to come to the show!
Can you remember the first song you wrote when you were young? What was it called?
I wrote my first song when I was 12, I think. It was called ‘My Mom Is Gone’ because she was always working.
Tell us your best story from touring.
Probably when I got dropped when I tried to crowd surf on my birthday.
If you could pick three fellow musicians to have a meal with who would it be and why?
John Mayer, Thundercat and MonoNeon, because it would be a really funny conversation.
How did it feel to be asked by Apple Music to feature in their Up Next series?
It was crazy! I felt so honoured and happy to be a part of it!
Tell us about that show, how did it go?
The show was really fun. It was small, but the crowd was really into it!
You’ve got quite a few dates lined up in the UK, including shows in London and Manchester, have you visited these cities before?
I’ve only been to London. I’m excited to see the rest of the UK!
Why should people come to see your show?
People should come because it’s good live music and really entertaining. You can also see me dance. My band and I know how to put on a show.
