Honeymoan hail from South Africa, but there’s already considerable hype around the band after just 6 released songs. We spoke to their lead guitarist, Skye, about their short, but exciting, journey so far and their upcoming trip to Manchester’s Castle Hotel.
When and why did you start playing?
We all came from musical families, having at least one parent or other family member who played an instrument of some kind. I came from a home where there was a lot of classical music and ‘golden oldie’ type stuff always being played in the house – I also played a lot of guitar in church as a teenager!
What are your fondest musical memories?
Once again very different for all of us but for me, probably hearing Rage Against The Machine for the first time at age 12…
How do you handle mistakes during a performance?
I treat it as an absolute disaster. We stop and start the song from scratch… Nah, just kidding – don’t worry about it, I saw MGMT make some serious mistakes once, and that was after being a band for probably 8 years already! Just keep a straight face and keep going.
Do you have any pre-gig rituals?
We’ve only played one show, so not yet…I’m sure we will develop some on the road.
If you could pick three fellow musicians to have a meal with who would it be and why?
Josh Homme, Victoria Legrand, Tyler The Creator.
What’s the music scene like where you’re from?
It’s great! There’s a small but active psych rock and garage rock scene, there’s plenty of jazz and lots of rappers trying to sound American.
You’re visiting Manchester in November. What impressions do you have of the city already?
Legendary musicians, ravers, Joy Division, Stone Roses, Madchester. We’re not really sure what to expect at all to be honest, but we’re all very excited.
What can people expect from your live show?
We’re still working it all out now but without a doubt something tight and exciting.
Why should people come to see you play live?
We have only played one show to date and already have a tour booked in Europe and UK based entirely off hype around 6 songs, 4 of which have only been out 2 months! Come see what all the fuss is about.
