Liverpool born future R&B superstar Tayá has already gathered huge early support from the likes of Annie Mac, Mistajam, Clara Amfo, Trevor Nelson, DJ Target and Toddla T. Having been spotted playing live at an early age in her hometown, the 18-year old has already been collaborating with some of the finest R&B influenced producers both in the UK and Stateside. We caught up with Taya ahead of her debut headline show…
When did you first start making music?
I first started making music when I was about 13 years old, I used to spend every school holiday and the odd weekend coming down to London and getting in the studio developing my music.
Who is your biggest influence?
I don’t really have one influence, but if I had to pick I’d say my dad. He’s worked so hard his whole life for everything we have and I’m going to do the same for him.
What was your first gig?
My first gig ever was at the Methodist Centre in Toxteth, which was close to my home in Liverpool. I sang ‘Listen’ by Beyoncé and must have been about 12.
What is your favourite song to play live?
My favourite song to perform live is one of mine called Sweet Waste of Time. When I do a gig it’s often the first song in the set as it sets the tone for the rest of the set and is a good attention grabber.
What is your favourite album of all time?
I was obsessed and still am with ‘Channel Orange’ by Frank Ocean, I think he’s a genius.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
I would love to do a ‘The Boy is Mine’ type song with another female artist like Kehlani or Nao, that would be amazing.
Have you ever met someone that’s made you starstruck?
I met Nile Rodgers at a party in LA, I’ve always loved Chic since I was young so that was a big moment haha
What has been your favourite song this year?
My favourite song of the year I think has got to be Fetish by Selena Gomez I love her at the minute.
What should people expect at one of your gigs?
People should expect real honest music and a little insight into what makes it so special for me.
If you could choose anything to be on your rider, what would it be?
Flowers…I love flowers haha, the more the merrier!
