Introducing… Omar Apollo

2018 has indeed been a very busy year for new artist Omar Apollo. If you haven’t heard of the name yet, you will do soon. Growing up in Indiana, Omar taught himself to play guitar and sing through YouTube tutorials, then began uploading to Soundcloud when he was a teenager. He was very DIY in his methods of starting out as a musician, but it didn’t stay that way for long.

Debut album, ‘Stereo’, was self-released on all streaming platforms on 29th May. Comprising of only 7 short but sweet songs, it is a beautiful amalgamation of genres that is only a glimpse of what Omar Apollo is capable of. His Prince-like falsetto vocals are an amazing contrast to the deep bassline and percussion in ‘Ignorin’, but Omar’s real talent lies in how effortlessly he is able to switch between and mould himself into  the different genres. ‘Ugotme’, currently his most played track on Souncloud, is a mix of slow soul and blues, with a hypnotic swing rhythm. ‘Stereo’ gained a praising, in depth review from online music magazine Pitchfork, with an overall rating of 6.8- not bad for a very new artist to the music scene.

In the past few weeks Omar has reached over 1 million monthly listens on Spotify, finished his first headline tour which went all over America and put out a video to recent single ‘Erase’ which is directed by Kevin Lombardo. He has gained a loyal fanbase and following so quickly, with the ability to appeal to any music listener that fans were demanding extra dates for his tour.

It’s very easy to understand how Omar Apollo has gone from bedroom musician, to being on the line-up for festivals amongst artists such as Cardi B and Mac DeMarco (Tropicalia Festival, November 2018).
