Scarlxrd pushes boundaries. He does things differently and he knows you aren’t ready for it.
Scarlxrd creates a new kind of trap metal, fuses influences of Slipknot and Rage Against The Machine with Nelly and Eminem, but adds stylistic inspiration from anime and Japanese culture to the Americanised mix. While bands like Astroid Boys laid the foundations of this new wave of nu metal which was originally conceived by the likes of Korn, Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit, Scarlxrd digs them back up again. Switching between harsh screams and scuzzy guitar riffs to fast raps over minimalistic trip hop beats, his music is never in one genre for more than a second. That’s what makes it so intriguing.
Reigning from Wolverhampton, many would consider him an underground artist in the UK but globally he’s a phenomenal success. With the majority of his 888,000 monthly Spotify listeners coming from Paris, L.A, Chicago and Santiago, he’s already got world tours in mind.
Some may already be aware of his previous guises as he fronted the nu metal band Myth City, as well as made an name for himself as a popular YouTuber in 2013. However nothing sums up Scarlxrd’s radical change like the line from his 2017 breakthrough single ‘Heart Attack’: “I breakdown and recreate”.
Under this moniker, he has released six albums: スカー藩主, Rxse, Cabin Fever, Chaxsthexry, Lxrdszn and Dxxm. He prides himself on his consistency in putting out music as each of these collections were released within mere months of each other. His viral success lead to Noisey making a short documentary-style video with him, which saw behind the scenes of his angst-fulled music and why he’s exactly what the UK rap scene needs right now.
